Mountain Shelter Humane Society: Celebrating 40 Years of Compassion

For decades, the Mountain Shelter Humane Society has been a cornerstone of animal welfare in Union and Towns Counties. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the organization is embracing growth and undertaking exciting changes. Along with the expansion of its programs and services, the organization has a renewed vision for its animal shelter, now known as the Mountain Shelter Humane Society Adoption Center. This updated name captures the essence of its mission: offering a safe haven for local animals while prioritizing their adoption into loving homes. The work of the Center is made possible by the unwavering support of the community and local businesses. Additionally, proceeds from the Mountain Shelter Humane Society Thrift Store play a crucial role in funding the Adoption Center’s operations. The Adoption Center recently welcomed Cassie Channel as its new Director, signaling a new chapter in leadership. Cassie is a strong advocate for animals in need. She brings many years of experience rescuing and caring for homeless animals. Under her guidance, the Adoption Center is focused on expanding its impact and strengthening its commitment to the animals and community it serves.

The Mountain Shelter Humane Society is starting 2025 with a bold rebranding, including a fresh new logo and an updated website, which is set to launch soon. These updates aim to reflect the organization’s growth and renewed commitment to its mission.

The Mountain Shelter Humane Society Thrift Store in Blairsville has recently undergone a transformation, making it an even more inviting atmosphere for shoppers to find hidden treasures. Thanks to these efforts, the store continues to thrive, further bolstering the organization’s ability to care for animals in need.

As the Mountain Shelter Humane Society commemorates 40 years of service, plans are underway for a series of events and celebrations throughout the year. Celebrations will reflect on the organization’s history and also raise awareness of the needs of homeless animals in our community. Our next event will be our February 1st Community Microchip Clinic. Free microchips will be available at our Thrift Store from 10am to 2pm. Additional details can be found on our Facebook pages.

We are thankful for the community’s continued support of the Mountain Shelter Humane Society. Contributions, whether monetary donations, supplies, or volunteer time are critical to meeting our mission. You can also support us by shopping at or donating to our Thrift Store where every purchase and donation directly benefits the animals.

For those looking to adopt, the Adoption Center invites you to visit and meet the many animals waiting for their fur-ever homes. Whether you’re looking for a playful puppy, a cuddly kitten, or a seasoned companion, the Adoption Center has a match for you.
